Measure the table. One of the biggest mistakes most people make is buying too small of a rug. Measure the table and add 24 inches for each side of the table. This will accommodate the chairs being pulled out to sit down. If the rug is too small, the legs could catch on the sides or become a tripping hazard. As you can see in the picture above
A rug under the dining room table 1. Catches lots of crumbs and stains, and 2. Makes it harder to push chairs in and out. I think the one under the couch is enough. If you feel like the room needs another rug you could add a runner by the buffet cabinet/stairs. It depends.
In general, 8’ x 10’ rugs work well underneath a standard 6-seat dining table, and 9’ x 12’ rugs work under an 8-seat table. Be sure to take removable table leaves into account for your calculations, if you have them! We know it’s not always possible to get a rug this large for your outdoor dining space, due to space or budget
Tip. Layering rugs work best when your two rugs are two different sizes. One should be large and more dominant, and the others should be smaller and act as an accent. For example, a 9-inch by 12-inch rug would look great with a 6-inch by 9-inch rug layered on top. An easy rule of thumb: Make sure the top rug is at least 2/3 the size of the rug
Ideally, a 48" table should be placed on an 8' or 9' round area rug, providing 24" behind each chair so guests can slide in and out easily. Round tables pair well with round or square area rugs, so an 8' x 8' or 9' x 9' square rug would also work. Ideal Square Rug Size: 8' x 8'. Ideal Rectangle Rug Size: 8' x 10'.

Trick 1: Use an Outdoor Rug. The only other time we’ve successfully had a rug under our table was when we used an outdoor rug (so I’m not quite sure why I didn’t start my rug search there when we first moved in). Outdoor rugs, as you might expect, provide durability and food/liquid resistance that traditional indoor rugs don’t, making
forward - the legs of the chairs should sit comfortably on the rug, even when pulled out for people to sit. And remember, keep 18 inches of bare floor exposed on the edges of the rug. Round Eight foot round rugs are a great choice for round dining tables with 4 to 6 chairs. 9 x 12 Typically a 9x12 or 8x10 rug will work under a dining table
